Electric Service

Reliable electric service, delivered by friendly Co-op employees, is something you should be able to count on. At McLeod Cooperative Power Association, we are committed to providing our members with superior service.

Besides standard, single-phase residential and farm services, the Cooperative also provides three-phase service, commercial/industrial service, rental security lights, and a variety of off-peak programs. Load management or off-peak programs are detailed below. Please call or contact our office for any other rates or services, as we will be glad to help you based on your personal service needs.

Load Management Programs

McLeod Cooperative Power offers “Load Management” or “off-peak” programs to our electric members. These programs are designed to reduce electric use during the times when demand for electricity is greatest. Control of peak demand helps keep electric rates stable for all members.

These money-saving and energy-saving programs are offered for electric heating, water heating, and cooling. Cooperative members participating in the program pay only the half-price rate per kilowatt-hour for the energy used by appliances on these programs.

Programs include:

Dual Fuel: Electric heat with an automatic fossil fuel or storage heating back-up system qualifies as Dual Fuel. This can be electric baseboard heat with an oil furnace back-up system, an air-source heat pump with a gas furnace, a ground-source heat pump with storage heating in the floor, a mini-boiler with a gas boiler back-up, or numerous other combinations. The plan is that on the coldest winter nights or during control times, the electric heat may be interrupted for several hours (up to a maximum of 400 hours per year) and the automatic back-system will provide heat during those times.

Storage Heat: Central storage forced air furnaces or room storage heaters with bricks inside qualify for the Storage Heat Program. Electric heating cables or panels in the earth below the cement slab can also qualify for the Storage Heat Program.

Storage loads usually charge up for eight hours each night (between approximately 11 PM and 7 AM) and are then able to provide heat to the building 24 hours a day.

Water Storage: One or two electric water heaters on the Storage Program heat the home’s domestic water between 11 PM and 7 AM. The supply of stored hot water is then ready to meet the families laundry, bathing, kitchen and other needs for the rest of the day. This program has a satisfaction guarantee; that if the Co-op sizes your system based on your family, we guarantee you will have sufficient hot water each day or we will increase the charge time of your water heater per day until you do have plenty of hot water.
An average family of four will save $20-$25 per month on this program.

Peak Shave Water Heating: By allowing the Cooperative to turn your water heater off for up to eight hours on peak days, you receive a $5 monthly credit on your electric bill. (Minimum use of 600 kWh per month is required to receive credit).

Cycled Cooling: Heat pumps on the Dual Fuel Program may be cycled during the summer for the cycled cooling rate. Central air conditioners, when combined with another metered off-peak load, may also receive the lower off peak rate for all cooling. Any heat pump or air conditioner on the program will be cycled 50% on/50% off during peak hours on the highest summer electric demand days. Cycling usually occurs between 2 PM and 9 PM, however, it can occur at any time.

Air conditioners, when they are the only controlled load in the home, will receive a $6 per month credit (during the three summer months) for cycling, instead of the metered rate. Installation of the peak shave switch will be provided at no charge by the Cooperative or $60 will be paid toward the cost of installation by your own electrician.

Generator Back-up: Commercial customers or farms that average at least 50 kW monthly demand, and are able to either curtail operation or operate an automatic generator during peak control times may be eligible for the Generator Back-up Program. Call the Energy Management Department for details.
